fishing tips

The main target species in Lake Bemidji, is walleye. Both the depth and structure of this lake makes it an excellent habitat for walleye. The main forage base for the walleye are yellow perch and minnows. Generally any baits that mimic this forage can be productive. Fishing is best on overcast days and dawn and dusk. Trolling firetiger body baits can be deadly. The walleye population on Lake Bemidji is very healthy, even thou the lake receives significant fishing pressure, both during the summer and winter ice fishing. The average walleye is 1-2 lbs, although larger fish in excess of 7 lbs are caught annually.

Lake Bemidji is famous for it's trophy muskie fishery. Fish in excess of 50" are caught annually and muskie hunters regularly ply the waters in search of these trophy fish. Most anglers targeting muskie, will troll large bodybaits along weedlines and drop-offs. The patterns of choice are perch and walleye imitation baits.

Another highly sought after sportfish in Lake Bemidji, is the yellow perch. The lake has a very healthy perch population and many jumbo perch in excess of 12" can be caught, although the average size perch is about 9", which still make excellent table fare. Typical fishing methods are used by anglers targeting perch, perch rigs and small spinners baited with worms nearly always produces fish.

Northern pike also inhabit Lake Bemidji and are often an overlooked species. the average sized pike in Lake Bemidji is about 3 lbs, although larger fish in excess of 8lbs are caught on occasion. Pike fishing is best in shallow weedy areas, where anglers troll or cast spinnerbaits and bodybaits. Once again firetiger coloured lures have been known to be very successful.

Panfish are also available in Lake Bemidji , mainly bluegills and crappie, although their populations seem low and are not often targeted by anglers in the lake.
