Leech Lake is the third largest lake in Minnesota located southeast of Bemidji, within the Leech Lake Indian Reservation and Chippewa National Forest. It covers 1 02,947.83 acres (416.6151 km2) and 195 miles (314 km) of shoreline. It has a maximum depth of 156 feet (48 m).
Leech Lake is a dammed reservoir which outlets to the Leech Lake River, which eventually flows into the Mississippi River. Leech Lake has seven major inlets tributaries which include Portage Lake Creek, Sucker Creek, Steamboat River, Benedict River, Shingobee River, Bishop Creek, and the Boy River. Leech Lake is doted with many islands; eleven in total with the largest being Bear Island, Minnesota Island, Pelican Island and Headquarters Bay Island.
Leech Lake has a spectacular fishery, with a wide diversity of sport fish available. The lake is full of fish holding structures, with many islands, points, drop-offs and weedlines. Fishing for all species is generally very good. The lake contains; black crappie, bowfin, bluegill, brown bullhead, catfish, eelpout, hybrid sunfish, largemouth bass, muskellunge, northern pike, pumpkinseed sunfish, rock bass, smallmouth bass, Tullibee (cisco), walleye, white sucker, yellow bullhead and yellow perch.
The Minnesota state record lake whitefish (12 lb, 4.5 oz) and pumpkinseed (1 lb, 5.6 oz) were both caught in Leech Lake in 1999.
One of the most popular events held on Leech Lake each winter, usually during February is the International Eelpout Festival. The eel pout, also known as the Burbot, is very plentiful in Leech Lake during the winter and this event attracts hundreds of anglers from all over the USA and Canada. The event includes a black-tie dinner, ice bowling, and a contest to see who can catch the largest eel pout.
